GLSEN’s “Day of Silence” has become an annual tradition in the LGBTQ+ community, but they changed it to the Day of NO Silence this year.

Maybe they were inspired by suffragette Susan B. Anthony, who fought for gender equality. Born 200 years ago, she never stopped speaking up, but a large part of her was silenced: She was a lesbian hero but they don’t teach that in history class.

Conservative co-sponsors abandon their own bill after gay politician’s powerful speech

A reader wrote to me to add, “The whole time, LGBTQ+ people and their families (including my own) have been calling and meeting with their legislators to make this a real issue for them, which has had an impact even in deep Republican central Nebraska.”

“…It’s crucial to show LGBTQ+ readers that it’s the long, unglamorous work behind the scenes that builds the foundation for changes like this. Most people either think they can’t have an impact, or that all they need is one good speech… but our community needs to see what effective change-making looks like so they’ll start having those behind-the-scenes conversations.”
