Two very different queer love stories that celebrate diversity ‘THINGS LIKE THIS’ and ‘RENT FREE”

Two very different queer love stories have appeared on Queerguru’s radar that are all about ‘that word’ we are not meant to use …..diversity!

Things Like This, written, directed and starring plus-size Max Talisman is the story of two very different gay men with the same names.  Zack Anthony (Talisman) is living with his brother Kenny, who tells him to fix his slovenly appearance and find a job. Whilst the other  Zack (Mandel) played by Joey Pollari is at a point in his life when he realises that his two-year relationship with Eric is going nowhere. When the two Zacks meet, their banter is lively, so they schedule a drink the next day.. The date starts badly, but they connect and discover a shared past. The size difference is never an issue, which makes this unlikely-seeming delightful romance so natural.  As the story unfolds without referencing it, you find it just disregards body-shaming that sadly is still prevalent in parts of our queer community.  Love wins ….go see

RENT FREE is also about ‘size’ but this time referring to wallets and is the story of , two best friends hatch a plan to live… rent free *ding* off the generosity of friends and family, all while working and saving up for a big move to New York City.

longtime pals Ben (Jacob Roberts) and Jordan (David Treviño) will have to learn as they free-load their way across Austin, TX—unless they burn every bridge in town first. Homeless Ben has to crash at the artpetmt Jordan shares with his girlfriend, an arrangemnet that quickly goes sour and both he andf Jirdan are kicked out

Now totally desperate the two devise their “rent free” scheme, and so begins a house-hopping odyssey of friendship, frustrations, and futons The true heart of the movie is the connection between Ben and Jordan, which is at times easy and lived in, but also can casually cruel in the way only a bond 15 years in the making can be.

But there’s a catch, Ben is gay and Jordan’s bisexual, meaning theirs is the kind of queer friendship rarely seen on screen. Filmmaker, Fernando Andrés said in a press statement that he set out to explore “the relationships between queer men that go beyond sex and romance,” and he does a damn good job.

Rent Feee will be in US movie theaters June 27th
