To mark his 95th Birthday, Opera Parralle in SF present the opera HARVEY MILK: REIMAGINED

The best part of landing in San Francisco Airport recently after a very (!) long absence was discovering the Terminal was named after HARVEY MILK.  It immediately conjured up such wonderful memories of one of the iconic early leaders of the fledgling LGBTQA+ community, who lost his life in the fight for our rights. In the present political climate, where our very presence could be under threat again, we need to evoke that inspiration that Milk so selflessly gave us, too.

It would have been his 96th birthday this June at the start of Pride Month, and Opera Parallèle will mark the occasion with the new adaptation of the acclaimed opera  HARVEY MILK REIMAGINED by Composer: Stewart Wallace and  Librettist: Michael Korie.  It captures Milk’s transformative journey from a NY Jewish boy during World War II, to a closeted Wall Street businessman, who moved to San Francisco and became a beloved and heroic, outspoken community leader. He was the first openly gay man in 1978 to be elected to public office in California and served on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for 11 months before being assassinated, along with then-Mayor George Moscone, at San Francisco City Hall. It brings to life not only the story of this groundbreaking leader, but also the people who stood beside him, challenged him, and shaped the movement he helped ignite. From longtime partner Scott Smith to fellow activists like Anne Kronenberg, these key figures reflect the rich, complex human story at the heart of the opera’s powerful narrative.

Harvey Milk  will run May 31 to June 7, 2025 at the Blue Shield of California Theater, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and also at that time, there is a whole series of community events to explore the process, themes, and history of Harvey Milk.
