The brilliant Laverne Cox co-writes/stars in CLEAN SLATE a comedy about ‘reconciling’ your family with your real identity

 

Trans actress and activist LAVERNE COX is so used to pushing the envelope ever since her breakthrough role in the hit TV series Orange Is The New Black which earned her a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for Acting. She was the first trans person ever to be honored in this category and would go on to win a Daytime Emmy for producing for Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word.

Now she is about to launch her dream project  Clean Slate on Prime Video that she co-wrote and stars in.  Cox plays Desiree, a trans woman who relocates back to Alabama to repair her relationship with her father Harry (George Wallace) after two decades of estrangement. He is an “old-school car wash owner” who is “outspoken” and has no idea Desiree will be showing up – he is expecting his son to turn up – so some might imagine it to be a series full of intolerance and a storyline where Desire must ‘convince’ her dad to accept her.

It is however a very tender comedy about reconciliation and tolerance and although it carries a ‘message’ it is both positive and subtle at the same time.  As Desire has to convince her dad to accept her we are assuming that it’s because of Cox’s  involvement in the series that it’s void of any of the usual heavy-handed cliches 

If ever there is a time we so need to spread joy and happiness in our transgender community, it’s now and Clean Slate will so help you do just that.  Cox co-created the series with co-star Wallace, and Dan Ewen, and was executive-produced by the late comic genius Norman Lear.

 

The release date of Clean Slate is Thursday, February 6, 2025, on Amazon Prime Video. This season features 8 episodes, all of which will be released on the same day.
