Looking for inspiration this New Year, then, in case it’s passed you by, check out DJ/Producer Cormac’s Queerly Beloved podcast. Now on its second series, Cormac invites DJs, musicians, friends and allies from the LGBTQ+ community to talk about music, queerness and anything else that’s shaped their lives. In each episode Cormac’s guest selects music that evokes crucial moments, from childhood through to identity awakenings and first clubbing experiences, right up to current tracks they love. Past guests have included Beth Ditto, Peaches, Fat Tony and producer I.Jordan. It’s a great idea, like a queer Desert Island Discs.

Cormac says “Queerly Beloved is a discussion-based podcast. We’re crafting the discussion around six pivotal records. Really, it’s charting the guest’s unique story and the trajectory of growing up Queer in a straight world.”
The impetus for the podcast was firstly music, I love talking and geeking out about music and, also, I noticed much needed and important focus on individual identity within the LGBTQ+ community. I think that continues to be an important thing, something we are all learning from. Alongside that I wanted to highlight the feelings and things we share as a group. I wanted us to remember our commonalities and similarities also, It’s important we are united as a group in these challenging times.
In the first season I mostly interviewed people I knew, whereas Season 2 has been a new challenge in that I’m interviewing some people as I’m meeting them. I’ve also branched out and am chatting to folk who are in totally different areas of music than myself. I’ve really enjoyed that. Music and scenes can be different, but there are no new feelings. We can all unite on those.
I loved chatting with all of my guests. Some highlights from season 2 include my chat with Robert Owens. He’s such a lovely man., So much wisdom and history and grace in his words and interview. DJ Paulette was also a standout. What a woman! We talk a lot about biphobia and her story and knowledge of music is so vast.
All of the music we chat about through season 1+2 are compiled on a Spotify playlist. It’s way more eclectic and mad than you might imagine. It’s a wonderfully personal queer random mix of music.”
