Queerguru’s Ris Fatah reviews Dagmarr’s Dimanche, an intimate 1930’s Berlin-esq queer cabaret at London’s Crazy Coqs.

The glamorous queer French cabaret artiste Hersh Dagmarr was born at the beginning of the Twentieth Century and has enjoyed performing on the dimly-lit, louche, velvet-lined cabaret stages of Paris and Berlin for almost one hundred years now. Luckily for us, he’s a vampire and as alive, energetic and note-perfect as ever. Dagmarr’s Dimanche is Dagmarr’s ode to 1930s Berlin and the Weimar Republic, intimately hosted at London’s subterranean circular art-deco inspired Crazy Coqs cabaret space.

With a twinkle in his eye, lust on his mind and the colourful, fabulous pianist/arranger Frau Karen Newby by his side, Dagmarr takes us on a heartfelt musical journey from the 1930s to the present day. From the first song, a French version of Kylie’s Padam Padam, we are treated to classic after classic, with a set list comprising gems from Edith Piaf, Cole Porter and the Pet Shop Boys amongst others. There’s a humorous twist to several of the songs, and Dagmarr’s spoken intros range from the sexy to the sad, always personal. These make the show a full-bodied, warm-hearted intimate experience. There is a strong connection to the audience. Dancer/performer Molly Beth Morossa adds more sex with an erotic highly charged lip-synch performance halfway through proceedings. The three on stage entertain effortlessly to a very high standard, a great mix of nostalgia and modernity. Dagmarr’s voice is extraordinary, very powerful, and his show is both refreshingly original and very relatable. Decadence, romance and glamour. More please!
