Queerguru checks out ‘Qtopia Sydney’ the largest Centre for Queer history and culture in the world.

When it comes to celebrating Queer History on a global scale, there can be no better place than Qtopia Sydney, the largest Centre for Queer history and culture in the world. It has a remarkable heritage, as the concept for Qtopia Sydney originated in the 1980s with Professor David Cooper, who envisioned a space to honour the lives of those affected by HIV/AIDS. This vision was carried forward by his wife, Dorrie Cooper, and founding member David Polson. Polson, one of the first men diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in Australia, participated in 28 clinical trials under Professor Cooper’s care, contributing to significant advancements in HIV treatment.
The initiative gained momentum through the efforts of numerous community members, including the founding committee and board, who were driven by a range of motivations—some aimed to commemorate friends lost to AIDS, suicide, or hate crimes, while others sought to establish a platform for education and awareness.
Qtopia Sydney first opened during Sydney WorldPride in 2023, with a temporary location in Green Park, Darlinghurst but In 2024, it officially opened its permanent home in the historic Darlinghurst Police Station, located adjacent to the former Darlinghurst Gaol. (The choice of site caused some controversy at the time.)
Qtopia Sydney presents a diverse range of exhibitions exploring significant aspects of LGBTQIA+ history and culture. These are organised into five main themes: HIV/AIDS, human rights, sexuality and identity, media representation, and First Nations stories—both past and present.

Current exhibitions include The Making of Mardi Gras, which celebrates the creativity, labour, and community spirit behind one of the world’s most iconic queer cultural events. Since the first protest march in 1978, Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras has grown into a globally recognised celebration of visibility, resistance, and pride. This exhibition brings together original Mardi Gras posters, archival footage from legendary afterparties, and a selection of notable parade costumes, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how the spectacle is made. Central to this history is the Mardi Gras Workshop, established in 1982, which provided a vital space for artists, volunteers, and community groups to design and build floats and costumes.

Loving is a collection of photographs of people in love that presents a rare and moving archive of same-sex intimacy, drawn from the internationally significant collection of Hugh Nini and Neal Treadwell. Comprising over 4,000 photographs gathered across five continents and dating from the 1850s onward, the collection began with a single image of two men in a tender embrace discovered in a Texas antique store. Together, these works reveal acts of quiet courage, moments where to be seen together was itself a risk. Loving is both a recovery of the past and a testament to enduring queer presence, intimacy, and resilience.

Even though facing any aspect of the AIDS pandemic can still be personally tough, especially for those of us who lost so many loved ones, it’s a subject we have to remember if nothing less than to celebrate all those lost lives. Ward 17 South is presented in partnership with St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, and reconstructs a room from Australia’s first dedicated HIV/AIDS treatment and care ward. The exhibition was first presented at the National Art School as part of Sydney WorldPride 2023 and was subsequently installed as a permanent, inaugural exhibition at Qtopia Sydney following the museum’s opening in 2024. The exhibition covers the period from Australia’s first AIDS diagnosis in 1982 to the closure of Ward 17 South in 2007. It documents the development of clinical care, community response, and activism associated with the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Sydney during this period.
In addition to its exhibitions, Qtopia Sydney offers a broad performance program encompassing theatre, comedy, music, and dance. The museum also delivers a range of educational and community programs, including interactive workshops and facilitated discussions aimed at fostering dialogue, learning, and inclusion.
