QUEER FILM NACHT : One night a month 40 cinemas in Germany & Austria show a new queer film

Queerguru takes its hat off and salutes the German and Austrian Film Industry who collectively  insure that no matter where you live in this part of Europe, then at least once a month you will get the opportunity to sse a new queer film.. Queer Film Night takes place regularly in over 40 cinemas in Germany and Austria on the 2nd Wednesday of every and you  check directly which of the partner cinemas is near you and find the screening date on the respective film page.

For Feb 10th the movie is  BABY a film by Marcelo Caetano

18-year-old Wellington is released from youth detention. His parents moved away during his two-year sentence and have not left him any contact. Wellington has to make his way alone on the streets of São Paulo. In a porn cinema he meets 42-year-old sex worker Ronaldo. The experienced escort takes the young man under his wing and shows him the red-light district, where Wellington also begins to work under the name “Baby”. An ambivalent relationship develops between the two, characterized by closeness and care, but also by dependencies and latent dangers.

March’s Film is  Layla.  by Amrou Al-Kahdi 

London in Pride month. Drag performer Layla is performing at a dreary corporate event that has made queer friendliness its mission purely for advertising purposes. It is here, of all places, that Layla is flirted with by the young marketing expert Max. Although the two come from different worlds – Layla is non-binary, has Palestinian roots and lives in an exciting queer artist community; Max is gay, comes from a conservative British family and has mostly yuppie friends – a real love frenzy develops between them. But when Layla tries to adapt to Max’s world in order to be more “compatible” for him, conflicts arise. Max begins to question himself and his privileges as a white cis man for the first time. Does their love even have a chance?

What does it mean to love someone – and should we sometimes give up part of our own identity for that? In “Layla”, director Amrou Al-Kadhi – himself non-binary and a drag performer in London with Iraqi roots – tells a modern story about two people who find each other precisely because of their cultural, social and sexual differences and discover something new about themselves. A stirring plea for standing up for yourself and for each other – despite all (supposed) expectations!

Then for April its the turn of lesbians with Lesvia.  a film by Tzeli Hadjidimitriou

Since the 1970s, lesbians from all over the world have been drawn to the island of Lesbos, the birthplace of the ancient Greek poet Sappho. In the following decades, an active lesbian community developed in the coastal village of Eressos, where women could finally live and love openly and freely. Today, there is a lesbian bar in the village as well as several hotels and restaurants run exclusively by and for women. On the beach, the women are among themselves. Even though most locals have shown solidarity with the women over the years, there have also been repeated conflicts with conservative villagers who felt threatened by the lesbians.
