Police hunt for man caught on video shooting down a trans woman

Police in Houston, Texas are searching for the killer of Diamond Brigman, a 36-year-old Black transgender woman who was gunned down early last Saturday morning.

Surveillance video showed a passenger in a white 2017 Chevy Malibu sedan exiting the car around 1 a.m. and then shooting Brigman several times before leaving her dead on the side of the road. The passenger — described as an approximately 5-foot 5-inches tall man with a thin/medium build, wearing a gray hooded jacket — re-entered the car and its driver sped off, eventually abandoning the car and fleeing by foot. The suspects haven’t been arrested.

“[Brigman] was larger than life she had a lot of energy and always smiling and personable,” local trans advocate and a friend of Brigman, Joelle Espeut, told KHOU.

Atlantis, a local trans activist, has helped organize a vigil for Brigman at 5300 Caroline Street in Houston, Texas on March 24 at 2:30 p.m. local time. The vigil was co-coordinated with the Mahogany Project, an advocacy organization for marginalized individuals; as well as the Lavender Rights Project and Save Our Sisters United, Inc., two groups that help the Black intersex & gender diverse community.

According to the 2017-2022 Transgender Homicide Tracker, 73% of all confirmed homicides against Black trans women have involved a gun. Two-thirds of trans and gender non-conforming murder victims were killed by an acquaintance, friend, family member, or intimate partner.
