Pete Buttigieg nails rightwing anti-LGBTQ hate in just 15 words

Out Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg called out Republicans for their recent attacks on LGBTQ – and particularly transgender youth – rights, including the Florida Don’t Say Gay law.

“There is a more superficial political pattern that I think has driven some of the politics of the behavior of people like, people in Florida, the Don’t Say Gay bill,” Buttigieg said, speaking at the University of Chicago yesterday. “And that is: when all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a culture war.”

He said that the Republican Party “doesn’t really have a lot of answers for many of the questions that people are wrestling with,” citing gas prices, inflation, infrastructure, prescription drug prices, childcare, taxes.

“So what do they do? They find somebody vulnerable and pick on them. Which, at the moment, is largely the trans community.”

Buttigieg said that their strategy is to present “laughable” arguments like “Donald Duck is going to make your kids gay” as well as “dark” arguments like “the suggestion that the very presence of someone who is gender non-conforming, or trans, or gay, or lesbian, or otherwise different, the very existence of somebody like that is an adult subject.”

Buttigieg said that he’s worried that “if my kids, let’s say in a first-grade classroom, let’s say were to mention in passing that over the weekend they had a great time going with their dads to the zoo, that they would have somehow by saying that uttered something age-inappropriate.”
