Peru man caught with mummy girlfriend, surprised to learn it’s a man

In Peru, a 26-year-old man has been arrested after his “girlfriend” was found in a cooler bag he’d brought to an archeological site to show off to friends.

The man was drunk.

The extreme May-December relationship was discovered in the picturesque city of Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca in southern Peru, where police questioned the man who was drinking with friends at the archeological park.

Julio Cesar Bermejo said the ancient relic, whom he called “Juanita,” was “like my spiritual girlfriend.”

“At home, she’s in my room, she sleeps with me. I take care of her,” he told local media.

According to Bermejo, his father brought “Juanita” home over 30 years ago.

“It’s not a Juanita, it’s a Juan,” a specialist at the Ministry of Culture told Agence France-Presse, explaining the mummy was a male and at least 45 years old at the time of death.

The mummy was in a fetal position and wrapped in bandages, typical of pre-Hispanic burials in the area at the foot of the Peruvian Andes.

Bermejo denied he was trying to sell the centuries-old remains and told police he was carrying the mummy around because “my friends wanted to see it.”

The cooler bag was used by Bermejo for local food deliveries.

“She sleeps in my bedroom, with me. There’s my bed, the TV set, and next to it, there’s Juanita,” Bermejo told a scrum of reporters at the site where he was arrested. “I take care of it. It’s like, if you’ll pardon the expression, as if it were my spiritual girlfriend.”

Bermejo claims his family tried to donate “Juanita” to a local museum without success. The culture ministry said it had taken possession “Juan’s” mummified remains “with the aim of protecting and preserving this heritage.”
