Middle school students call out Moms for Liberty for their homophobia with amazing letters

Students at a Seattle middle school sent a message to Moms for Liberty: “Stop bullying and excluding LGBTQ youth and families.”

Last month, the anti-LGBTQ+ organization’s official X account posted photos of an envelope full of cards it received from Seattle Public Schools. The hand-made cards were decorated with rainbow stickers and featured messages like “LGBTQ+ rights are human rights” and “Gay is slay, love is love, & ur wrong! Grow up!”

He was indicted for having oral and anal sex with a 14-year-old boy.

The cards were accompanied by a brief letter from Seattle Public Schools teacher and GSA coordinator Ann Christianson. “Please read the enclosed cards from concerned middle school students in Seattle, Washington,” Christianson wrote.

In its post, Moms for Liberty accused Seattle Public Schools of “spending class time indoctrinating and weaponizing” children.

But a Seattle Public Schools spokesperson told conservative broadcaster Sinclair Broadcast Group’s Crisis in the Classroom that the cards “were sent last spring as an independent activity and not part of the school curriculum.”

“We firmly uphold the rights of our students, staff, and families to express their authentic selves,” the spokesperson added.

The same day the Moms for Liberty account posted images of the cards, co-founder Tiffany Justice took to X to deny that the organization is anti-LGBTQ+.

“Love who you want. Moms for a Liberty has gay members. We have members with gay kids,” Justice wrote. “This isn’t about sexual orientation. This is about the sexualization of children. It’s completely unnecessary and actually quite harmful.”

In fact, Moms for Liberty, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has designated an extremist group, has used false accusations of “sexualizing children” and “grooming” to push for bans on LGBTQ+ books in schools.

Since its founding in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the group has shifted its focus from opposing mask and vaccine mandates in schools to whipping up right-wing hysteria against anti-racist and LGBTQ+ content. Its past activities include offering bounties for turning in teachers who discuss “divisive topics,” attacking the Trevor Project for trying to prevent LGBTQ+ teen suicide, trying to get a book about seahorses banned for being too sexy, complaining about a book on the Civil War because it portrays “white people as ‘bad’ or ‘evil,’” trying to get librarians arrested for offering “inappropriate books,” saying that two girls briefly kissing at a school function is “lewd” and “traumatic,” lobbying in Florida for the Don’t Say Gay bill, encouraging schools to ignore LGBTQ History Month, and suggesting that LGBTQ+ students be forcibly isolated from other pupils.

Moms for Liberty has become an influential backer of conservative and anti-LGBTQ+ school board candidates across the country. But the group saw significant defeats this year. As the Associated Press reported last month, about 70% of candidates who were endorsed by conservative groups like Moms for Liberty lost their races during the 2023 elections.
