Meghan Trainor issues apology for controversial Drag Race appearance: ‘I never meant to disrespect’

Meghan Trainor wants you to know – she didn’t steal a Drag Race queen’s sandwich.

When the “All About That Bass” singer guest judged on season nine of RuPaul’s Drag Race, fans were – to put it lightly – less than impressed.

While the competing queens, RuPaul and Michelle Visage were working overtime to serve glamour and eleganza, Trainor turned up in a unicorn onesie.

Years later, Trinity the Tuck said that Trainor “didn’t seem like she wanted to be there”.

“She was just like whatever,” Trinity said in 2021.

“Apparently, she took Shea Coulee’s sandwich during season nine during lunch before she could get to it. That’s what I was told.”

Cue abject disgust and outrage.

Trainor wisely waited until Drag Race fans had put down their pitchforks – or at least, found a new target for them – to address Trinity’s comments.

“Lmao…why,” she wrote on TikTok after a fan brought the fiasco up. “Didn’t eat anyone’s sandwhich hahahaha i promise.”

She added that she “never meant to disrespect anyone”.

“I was in the middle of my tour and had zero time to do a fitting and get an outfit and asked the show i could wear my unicorn onesie lol and they said yes. So sorry.”

While Trinity the Tuck wasn’t impressed by Meghan Trainor, there was one guest judge she had nothing but high praise for.

Of course, it was Lady Gaga. Trinity said she felt like she was having a “genuine conversation” when the star gave her critiques on the show.

“She was there to really help us through this competition,” she said.

Drag Race returns on 7 January for season 14, with Lizzo leading the line-up of celebrity guests.

Ava Max, Alicia Keys and Taraji P. Henson will also guest judge, along with Andra Day, Loni Love, Christine Chiu, Dove Cameron, Nicole Byer, Ts Madison, Alec Mapa and Dulce Sloan.

Jennifer Lopez will make a virtual appearance, along with Sarah McLachlan, Norvina and Leslie Jordan.

The new year will bring a double helping of RuPaul, as February will see the launch of Drag Race: UK Versus the World.

The new spin-off, which will form the centrepiece of BBC Three’s return to airwaves, will see RuPaul, Michelle Visage, Graham Norton and Alan Carr judge nine returning queens from the UK, US and other international editions of the franchise.
