Mammy’s House Explores the Irish LGBTQ+ Community During the AIDS Crisis

There are uncomfortable parts of queer history which need to be shared and remembered no matter how tough they may be. When the global AIDS pandemic hit Ireland, it was even more devastating than for most of the developed world.HOMOSEXUALITY WAS STILL ILLEGAL (until 1993) so there were NO AIDS HOSPITALS OR TREATMENT CENTERSso everyone suffering from this potentially fatal disease had to leave and go to England or any other European country.

A new play, MAMMYS HOUSE, tells the story of this devastating part of history and how, as the Catholic Church would eventually lose its vice-like grip in the country, and a strong LGBTQA+ community would emerge.

The AIDS pandemic may have disappeared, but the disease has not, so Queergueu sat down wth the play’s creators, Amy Clarke and Derek Murphy on the eve of its World Premiere in London to discover why they wanted to share the story now
