Madonna’s daughter Lourdes Leon has made her debut as a solo artist, with her new song “Lock&Key” under the moniker Lolahol.

Leon dropped the clubby track on Wednesday (24 August), with a video showing her performing on a funeral hearse, a graveyard, and on the shore as waves crash over her near-naked body.

The video is directed by Eartheater who produced the track with Samuel Burgess and Hara Kiri.

Madonna shared her daughter’s debut to her Instagram story, captioning it: “I am so proud of you Lola”.

Lourdes Leon’s “Lock&Key” seems to not only be inspired by her mother but another pop icon, Lady Gaga.

In the lyrics, Leon sings: “No sleep, next plane, no sleep, make-up, next club, next car, next plane, no sleep, no fear,”

This is a clear reference to the memorable interview Gaga did with Fuse in 2011 when asked about the difference between creating her first album “in peace” and her next highly-anticipated album Born This Way.

In response she said: “Every night. No sleep! Bus, club, ’nother club, ’nother club, plane, next place. No sleep. No fear. Nobody believed in me. That album was not made ‘in peace.”

The quote became immortalised in the cultural landscape with not only fans reshaping it but it even made its way into the first season of Netflix’ Emily In Paris.

Considering Madonna and Gaga’s history, with Gaga fighting accusations of stealing Madonna’s 1989 single “Express Yourself” for her hit “Born This Way”, it is a bold move from Leon.

Although the two pop stars were spotted hugging during Madonna’s Oscar afterparty in 2019, so it seems any bad blood is in the past.

The 25-year-old debut artist is Madonna’s only child with ex Carlos Leon. Prior to this had appeared on her mother’s 2012 song “Superstar”.

Lourdes Leon’s artistic direction seems to be striking a nice balance between ethereal melody placed to the backing of futuristic pop, but time will tell how she will expand her repertoire.
