Lauren Boebert ridiculed for making the worst gun control comparison ever

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) tried to attack Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) for calling for laws to reduce gun violence in the wake of the latest school shooting in the U.S. that left 19 children dead, but instead she’s the one getting mocked for a bizarre comparison she made.

Referring to the Congresswoman from New York as “Sandy Cortez” – a name conservatives use to make fun of her – Boebert complained about how Democrats want to make it harder to own a gun in the wake of the shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

“When 9/11 happened, we didn’t ban planes,” Boebert said on Fox News. “We secured the cockpits.”

Boebert apparently didn’t realize that planes, airports, and air travel are highly regulated, with fairly onerous rules that can get passengers banned from flying if they don’t follow them, rules that aren’t imposed on gun ownership in the U.S. Nor did she seem to remember that flights were in fact suspended in the U.S. and Canada in the days following the attacks.

People on social media mocked Boebert.

There are so many things wrong with this, but I'll key in on this: airport security has gotten so much tighter since 9/11. I can't even wear shoes going through security anymore. When a few planes killed a bunch of people we made air travel safer. Why can't we do that with guns? https://t.co/bw0rhRHmVU

When 9/11 happened and nearly 3,000 people died, and LESS THAN TWO MONTHS LATER we created an entire government agency in response, a agency that requires us to show government-issued ID, get screened with full body scanners, etc.

That many people die from guns every 25 days. https://t.co/l1re4pejJg

Water. You can not take a factory-sealed bottle of water through airport security anymore.

To FLY a plane, you need to be trained, certified and licensed – unless you are a hijacker.

So, she is proposing that possession of guns must require training, certification & licensure, or else you can be arrested on sight as a terrorist threat who has committed an illegal act.

Yeah I can’t think of anything that changed with air travel or at airports after 9/11. 🙄

— Mueller, She Wrote (@MuellerSheWrote) May 27, 2022

Planes aren't designed to kill people.

— Pé🌻 (@4everNeverTrump) May 27, 2022

Actually, when exactly two Boeing 737 Max planes crashed, they were banned. Worldwide. Until they could prove that it wouldn't happen again.

And you can certainly bet that if there were a plane crash every month, we'd have long banned planes before y2k.

When Richard Reid attempted to blow up a plane with a liquid, guess what we did in response?

WE BANNED LIQUID ON PLANES

We're still taking off our shoes at the airport after one failed shoe bombing attempt

We didn't ban planes, but we sure as hell suspended ALL flights. pic.twitter.com/34Xlf4Qtvi

Yeah, nothing changed at all, no TSA, no Patriot Act, no airport security, no, nothing at all

I’m so sick of this moronic logic. Planes weren’t designed to kill. The AR-15 has one purpose and one purpose only. The kill and maim as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time. #BringBackTheAssaultWeaponsBan pic.twitter.com/TJHoYKCRt2

Yeah because anybody can just go to the plane store and buy a 747 passenger airplane.

I guess the GED doesn’t require one to study analogies like the SAT.

"I am calling for a full forensic audit of Lauren Boebert’s GED exam."

Planes are not the number one cause of pediatric & adolescent deaths in the US. Guns are. If she had better than an eighth grade education she might know this.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story said that the shooting occurred in Ulvade, Texas. We regret the error.
