Lauren Boebert & Matt Gaetz have “never missed George Santos more”

Rep. George Santos (R-NY) may have been expelled from Congress last December, but his colleagues certainly haven’t forgotten him. Two of them are making it known that they wish he were back in Congress, despite the many lies he told – and scams he allegedly ran – to get into the House in the first place.

“Miss me yet?” Santos posted on X with a picture showing the House of Representatives tied 215-215 on H.R. 863, the resolution to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. One Republican would later switch their vote to let the resolution fail 214-216 so that the matter could be brought up again later.

She and an anti-LGBTQ+ activist made jokes about minors in sexual situations while saying kids should think about “God’s creation” instead of being LGBTQ+.

“I’ve never missed Santos more,” Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) responded solemnly. “Whoever he is.”

Santos was expelled from Congress in a 311-114 vote. Almost all Democrats voted to expel him, while Republicans were divided. Boebert and Gaetz were among the Republicans who voted to keep Santos.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) introduced the resolution to impeach Mayorkas last month. Republicans, citing increased arrests at the southern border and increased requests for asylum, have said that immigration is a crisis and blamed Mayorkas.

The resolution came to a vote on Tuesday and failed to pass with three Republicans and every Democrat in the House voting against impeachment.

While the resolution to impeach Mayorkas failed, even if it had succeeded it was unlikely to do much of substance. Two-thirds of the Senate would have had to vote to convict Mayorkas to remove him, which would have required a substantial number of Senate Democrats and every Senate Republican to support removing him, which was unlikely.

Boebert and Gaetz have long histories of anti-LGBTQ+ actions and rhetoric, both getting scores of 0 on HRC’s Congressional Scorecard due to their solid opposition to LGBTQ+ equality. Boebert was also named one of the biggest sources of anti-transgender misinformation on Twitter, and Gaetz – who is being investigated for possibly sexually abusing a minor – has called LGBTQ+ people “degenerate.”

Despite his opposition to LGBTQ+ equality, Gaetz was one of Santos’s most vocal supporters in the House, saying early in 2023 that Santos shouldn’t be “subject to shunning” and insisting the expelling Santos would do “grave damage to this institution for years to come” on the eve of the expulsion vote.

Boebert was repeatedly spotted with Santos in Congress.
