Lady Gaga called out Republicans during the Washington show of her Chromatica Ball tour with a warning against attacks on gay marriage in the US.

The pop icon dropped powerful political commentary into speeches throughout her performance at the Nationals Park on Monday (8 August), starting during her acceptance anthem “Born This Way”.

As she started playing, she told the crowd: “I see a lot of people in this audience who know exactly who you are.”

She also warned US law-makers had “better not mess with gay marriage in this country.”

Since the overturning of Roe v Wade in June 2022 – removing women’s rights to abortion and bodily autonomy – there have been concerns the right to same-sex marriage could also be rescinded.

Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas, who helped overturn the 1973 ruling, previously stated his opinion on gay marriage was in line with his views on abortion, causing concern among many LGBT+ people.

Later in the concert, as Gaga played gentle ballad “Always Remember Us This Way”, she addressed the crowd again, reflecting on the political turbulence minorities in America have faced in recent times.

“Over the past few years this country has been very brave and showed a lot of courage and there was a lot of pain,” she said.

“We wish we could go back and change what happened, but I want to remember your bravery.

“I think the world is pretty special, even though it’s f**ked-up, too.”

Reflecting on Roe v Wade, Gaga’s anger remained as she performed her ’80s-inspired anthem, “Edge of Glory”.

She dedicated the song to “every woman in America who now has to worry about her body if she gets pregnant.

“I pray that this country will speak up… that we will stick together and not stop until it’s right.”

Lady Gaga has consistently been an advocate for women’s and LGBTQ+ rights throughout her career.
