Short films are an art form all to themselves.  Lasting only some minutes means the Filmmaker must use each frame with care and be very precise in their storytelling.  The same goes for all the resources, and as they may be limited or restricted they need to ensure this does not impact the film negatively.  In fact, if they are deftly handled, they can add some qualities overlooked in feature-length films.

Some queer filmmakers make short films as a calling card and a stepping stone to making features.  Others so enjoy the medium that they now specialize in them.  Like Joseph Wilson an indie queer filmmaker whose work captures the reality of alternative  and eccentric queer life in Londons East End that Queerguru has come to be quite addicted too (if you do a ‘search’ for Joseph you’ll find we’ve written about him almost 20 times).  We are not alone for as recently as last year picked up the prestigious BFI Short Film Award.

But even Award winners like Joseph need help at times in getting the film up and running and Queerguru is hoping that some of you out there may feel the same.  This new film tells the story of a young gay teen, Lucian, struggling with his sexuality. Set against the backdrop of the year 2000 and under the oppressive Section 28 law, Lucian faces a world of isolation, confusion, and shame as he begins to explore his desires in secret. His journey towards self-acceptance is both heartbreaking and hopeful.

We feel this story is important to tell, as it sheds light on a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history, one that many people, particularly queer youth, can relate to. Joseph told  Queerguru  “My creative vision for this film is inspired by Yorgos Lanthimos Dogtooth and Francis Ford Coppola’s One From The Heart. The shots will be long, still and cinematic and create aeeling of isolation for Lucian. He is trapped amongst this beige world of hetronormative. mundanity and is forced to use his imagination to create his own nirvana. The narrative is based on my own experience of growing up in the 90s. The internet wasn’t around  yet and all the media I had access to explored exclusively straight themes. I’ve always been a dreamer and I used to imagine that my bedroom ceiling would transform into a treehouse that led me into the sky. These moments are inspired by Donnie Darko and Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind where Lucians imagination blurs the line of what is real and what isn’t.

I felt very trapped as a gay teen. I had no one to talk to about m sexuality, I didn’t even know what it was. Creating a world in my head was my key to escapism, and where my creative ideas were born.  Over the past 5 years, I have delved into my past through therapy and workshops (such as ‘The Gay Happiness Project’) and have been able to look back with a better understanding of who I was. The birth of so many complex addictions and relationshipsbegan in my early years so I wanted to make a short film that explored this moment inmy life under one umbrella.
