Jamie Lee Curtis tearfully gives her Oscar they/them pronouns to support her trans daughter

Jamie Lee Curtis has decided to give her new Oscar—her first—they/them pronouns in honor of her trans daughter, Ruby.

The Everything Everywhere All at Once actor won the award for Best Supporting Actress at Sunday’s 95th Academy Awards for her role as IRS agent Deirdre Beaubeirdre—who also happens to be the lover of the film’s star, Evelyn Quan Wang (Michelle Yeoh), in an alternate reality.

“We fell in love with each other,” Curtis said of her co-star from “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

On Tuesday, Curtis joined hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie on NBC’s Today Show to discuss her win. The Halloween star became emotional watching her acceptance speech for the first time during the segment. She then pulled her Oscar statuette on camera saying, “Here they are!”

“Have you named her?” Guthrie joked.

“In support of my daughter Ruby, I’m having them be a they/them,” Curtis replied. “I’m gonna just call them ‘Them.’ They/them. And they are doing great!”

A longtime LGBTQ+ ally, Curtis has been unwaveringly supportive of her daughter since 27-year-old video editor Ruby came out as trans in 2020.

“I am here to support Ruby. That is my job,” she told People Magazine in 2021. “Just as it is to care and love and support her older sister Annie in her journeys. I’m a grateful student. I’m learning so much from Ruby. The conversation is ongoing. But I want to know: How can I do this better?”

Last year, Curtis tweeted a touching birthday message to Ruby, pledging her support for trans rights. “I am proud 2 be your mother & am sending support 2 all trans families across the US targeted by conservative legislatures & I VOW 2 use my freedom of speech 2 SUPPORT my child & ALL trans children trying 2 live FREELY as who they are,” she wrote.

In October, in an interview with the Spanish network SER, she spoke about growing anti-transgender attacks from the Right. “I have a trans daughter,” she said. “There are threats against her life, just her existence as a human being. There are people that want to annihilate her and people like her.”

“The level of hatred, as if we haven’t learned from fascism, as if we haven’t learned what the result of that is: the extermination of human beings,” she continued. “That is terrifying.”

Following her Best Supporting Actress win on Sunday, Curtis spoke to reporters about the idea of non-gendered acting categories at the Oscars. “Of course, inclusivity then involves the bigger question which is, how do you include everyone when there are binary choices? Which is very difficult,” she said. “As the mother of a trans daughter, I completely understand that. And yet to de-gender the [categories] also, I’m concerned will diminish the opportunities for more women, which is something I also have been working hard to try to promote. So, it’s a complicated question. But I think the most important thing is inclusivity and more women.”
