HOWERDS END : the life and times of the great (queer) British comic FRANKIE HOWERD
Brit actor Mark Farrelly is on a mission. His last three plays that he has written and starred in are about the lives of queer icons who, in totally different ways, made a remarkable contribution to `British culture. And whose stories impacted queer history too.
Following on from Quentin Crisp and Derek Jarman, Farrelly has turned his attention to the iconic comedian Frankie Howerd, who for over 40 years in the middle of the last century was a major star on Television and Night Clubs. Howard, little known outside of the UK, whose career was somewhat of a roller coaster BUT he aiways came out on to. He was beloved by the British public. Especially the queer ones.
He met Dennis Heymer, the great love of his life, in the 1950s when homosexuality was still illegal, and despite Howard’s insistence on remaining in the closet all his life, their relationship successfully lasted for over 30 years
Farrelly’s play perfectly captures Howerd’s public and private persona and how his sexuality impacted his life on and off the stage. In this two-handed play Farrelly plays Dennis and Simon Cartwright gives a pitch-perfect performance of the great man himself.
