How designer Connor Ives told us to PROTECT THE DOLLS & support the Trans Community at this very tough time
Pedro Pascal at a ‘Thunderbolts*’ screening in London A spur-of-the-moment gesture by the 28 year old American queer fashion designer Connor Ives, who is based in London has become the must have T shirt that is make much needed funds to help the trans comunity that are so under attack right now. Just before he went on stage at the end of his runway show at London’s Fashion Week late February, he customised a T-shirt to wear which read PROTECT THE DOLLS (dolls being a term of affection for trans women). The next morning, his studio phone was ringing off the hook with everyone demanding where they could get the T-shirt and so he very quickly realised he had to do something to make this into a real project.
Fast forward to April and they found themselves making some 1000 of them a week to satisfy the demand. Ives told the NY Times that as it all exploded so fast and he didn’t have the staff to cope, he had ended up working on the production line himself. He’s already sold over $250,000 worth (and still climbing) and once he deducts about 1/3 for costs, the whole profit goes directly to Trans Lifeline. This is a trans-lead US-based charity that delivers life-saving services to those who need them most. The hotline connects trans people to a wider community, offering support and resources they need to survive and thrive. Given the US Federal government’s current hostility towards trans people, support like this is needed now more than ever
The shirt, which sells for roughly $99, has become a sensation, seen on celebrities like the “Last of Us” actor Pedro Pascal, the singer Troye Sivan , and the designer Haider Ackermann.
Ives ended the NY Times interview with :“This is getting out of hand, we need to re-evaluate how we’re doing this.” So we’re definitely investing in the infrastructure that will accompany this. The end goal for me would be to keep this as something that we can continue to sell and can continue to raise money for Trans Lifeline.
It’s kind of hard to be excited about any of this. It feels so upsetting that this is the world that we have to be in, this is the statement that we have to make in 2025. Are you kidding me?
