GENDER STORIES a new UK exhibition that explores the complexities of gender identity
It seems like such perfect timing for the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery‘s new exhibition GENDER STORIES that explores the complexities of gender identity. It comes just a week after the UK’s Supreme Court‘s controversial ruling that trans women can not be considered ‘real’ women. This bitter blow is exacerbated by a statement from the Prime Minister Sir. Keir Starmer that backed the Court’s ruling even though it runs contrary to his Party’s official stand. This groundbreaking exhibition explores the complexities of gender identity and invites visitors to delve into the multifaceted world of gender, challenging traditional binary narratives and exploring how gender intersects with sex, identity, and sexuality across cultures and history.
Through a diverse collection of art, artifacts, personal stories, and new artist commissions from Grayson Perry, David Hockney and Catherine Opie, this Gender Stories offers a space for reflection on the fluidity of gender and the evolving understanding of self-expression.
Exclusively for Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, trans artist and educator, Mister SAMO, has been commissioned to create two large murals in situ in the lead up to the exhibition launch. He is quoted “As a fulltime artist and transgender individual, I deeply appreciate the incredible support and encouragement I am receiving from Bristol Museum throughout my commission with them. Every stage of the process is being handled with mindfulness and care, featuring thoughtful, in-depth communication as the project unfolds
Philip Walker, Bristol City Council’s Head of Culture and Creative Industries, said “We acknowledge that LGBTQIA+ narratives tell a unique story in this conversation too. Although the exhibition touches on the harm that comes with gender, there is a focus on joy, celebration and expression too. Gender Stories offers an inclusive and dynamic space to engage with and understand gender beyond the binary, making it a vital visit for members of the LGBTQIA+ community and beyond.”
Gender Stories is an invitation for everyone seeking a deeper understanding of different experiences and emphasises the importance of dialogue and self-discovery.
The Exhibition has been created in collaboration with Bristol Museums, National Museums Liverpool, Brighton & Hove Museums, and communities from all three cities, Gender Stories showcases powerful narratives from people drawn from many communities. This sits alongside academic insights from gender theory, providing an inclusive platform for discussions on the joys and struggles of gender identity.
