Filmmaker Keri Pickett talks about her affectionate tribute to her UNCLE ROY : Ice dance skater + Godfather of Gay Photography
One of the important roles of Queer Cinema is to share our gay history, as so much of it is unknown to most of us. A prime example is an outstanding new documentary, UNCLE ROY, who in the 1960s was a star skater in all the Holiday on Ice Spectators, and was also a brilliant photographer of male nudes who became known as the Godfather of Gay Photography.
His whole life was lived under the radar, and we would never have found out about any of it of his niece, a budding photographer, had not begged to stay with him in NY as she tried to kick off her own career, The rest, they say, is history, but one we now know about because that same niece Keri Pickett, decided to make a film about her Uncle Roy and share it with the world.
Not only is his work stunning and so deserves to be shared, but also it’s one of those rare family stories from the past where a gay man is encouraged to be a real part of his own family.
Keri sat down with QUEERGURU at the Provincetown International Film Festival to talk about the sheer joy of putting this worthy tribute together
