Fans of Sex Education can rest easy… Ncuti Gatwa will be returning for a fourth season.

The news comes after Gatwa was chosen to be the next Time Lord in Doctor Who, replacing Jodie Whitaker.

Gatwa plays the queer fan favourite character Eric Effiong in the critically acclaimed show – and his army of admirers will get to see him reprise his role.

There had been fears Gatwa would not appear in the fourth season of Sex Education, however filming schedules have aligned and Gatwa will be able to appear in both Doctor Who and Sex Education.

Doctor Who, written by It’s a Sin showrunner Russell T Davies, is currently shooting in Wales and Sex Education will begin filming in the autumn, as reported in Variety.

Gatwa will also star in the upcoming Barbie movie alongside Sex Education co-star Emma Mackey, as well as Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

As fans celebrate Gatwa staying on the series, other fan favourites have unfortunately said their goodbyes (for now) to Sex Education.

Simone Ashley, who played Olivia, opted to leave the show as she is a regular on Bridgerton. Ashley is also set to star in The Little Mermaid next year.

Tanya Reynolds, who played as Lily, and on-screen girlfriend Patricia Allison, who played Ola, will both depart the series.

And Rakhee Thakrar, who played school teacher Emily Sands, is another character who won’t be returning to the show.

Despite these losses, the season shall go on, and Varitey reports the audience will “see a mixture of old and new exciting faces”.

When news of Ncuti Gatwa’s casting as Doctor Who broke in May this year there was resounding approval from the public.

Gatwa thanked fans saying: “Thank you for all your love. Means the entire universe… or Whoniverse rather.”

Sex Education is slated to return in 2023.
