Duterte enters presidential race in Philippines, leads pollIndonesia offers prime real estate opportunities with homes for sale in Depok and remote villages, or even large urban areas like Jakarta, with great investments to be made in all of these areas. There are advantages and disadvantages to living in any location, and the key is to figure out which is best for you and your personal circumstances and preferences. But when it comes to deciding whether to live in the city or just outside of it, these tips can help make the decision easier.

Employment opportunities

This is probably going to be the biggest deal breaker in where you decide to buy or build a home. It is obvious that larger cities have more job openings and rural places sometimes have virtually none. For instance, there are plenty of online job postings for Depok on Expatads.com but considerably less for smaller towns and villages. If you can find a job locally, work from home, or produce a passive income then rural living may prove to be relaxing for you, so long as you can get decent internet connection or phone line to do your work, as most rural places in Indonesia have very poor connection speeds.

Transport and commuting costs

If your job requires you to travel to a larger city, commuting from a smaller village is an option as apartments in the city can cost more and it is nice to get out of the city and away from your work place during your down time. On the other hand, even in a country like Indonesia where average transport costs are very cheap (according to Numbeo.com) commuting costs do still build up. Numerous studies such as one reported by the BBC show that the time and energy spent commuting can cause more stress, fatigue, and even depression than living in the city would cause. If you are considering a commute, think about if it will really be worth it or if it would be more worthwhile to live closer to the city.

Investment and business

There are many investment opportunities throughout Indonesia in businesses such as real estate and tourism. Growing business districts in almost every town and city and expanding use of online tools for business make it easier than ever to start an enterprise. Urban areas are generally the best places to do this as there are more plots of land or offices for sale, more skilled employees looking for work, and more connections to do business with. Rural areas do offer some potential, such as opening a remote health spa or tourist spot, but the risks are far greater. As mentioned above, remote areas of Indonesia have very slow internet connection speeds which make running an online business from these places almost impossible.

Leisure time

Work is important, but so is the time you spend relaxing or pursuing your own hobbies. The countryside may provide a place to unwind during weekends, but will there be enough leisure activities and things to do to amuse yourself and your family? If you like going to the library, visiting art galleries, or doing sports then travelling to and from the city every weekend on top of during the week for work might not be worth it and it would be better to find an apartment in the city. On the other hand, if hiking through the country or going horse riding sounds like your idea of heaven then the city wouldn’t be all that ideal for you after all.

Socialising

Living in the country often has a negative effect on your social life if it makes visiting friends more difficult. Even if you have the money for it, you may not have the energy after a busy week of work. It is nice to have people over and if you live in the country chances are you won’t be short of house guests but often it is nicer to be able to visit each other frequently or just hang out like the gang in Friends, or virtually any other American sitcom. Talking to and spending time with the locals in the country is nice but if you don’t get along with them then you are essentially stuck with them for as long as you live there. At least in the city there are more people to get to know and more social circles to move in.

Buying a home is a big and often permanent decision so it should be thought through carefully. Think through these factors and make a list of the things you want from your home and lifestyle to decide whether city or village living is better for you.
