Becky Hill hits back at misogynist, body-shaming trolls after Women’s Euro final appearance

Singer Becky Hill spoke out against body-shaming after misogynist criticism of her powerhouse performance at the Women’s Euros final.

The musician performed ahead of the kick-off at England’s winning match against Germany, singing hits in a sparkly bodysuit and boots.

While many praised the singer’s set, which she performed along with Stefflon Don and Ultra Naté, a now-deleted comment suggested Hill should have ‘covered up’.

It prompted the singer to make a statement about confidence and empowerment, stating that women should “cover up for no one”.

“Be proud of your bodies! Celebrate yourselves! Show off your curves! Cover up for no one and be confident!” Becky Hill said on Twitter. 

“Took me a long time to learn that and I wish I had role models like that growing up!”

She added in a separate tweet: “It’s only sexualised if you sexualise it.”

A record crowd of 87,192 people watched England’s Lionesses become Women’s Euro 2022 champions on Sunday (31 July), winning the first major trophy for an England football team since the men’s team won the World Cup in 1966.

The first goal came from Ella Toone, while the second came during extra time from substitute Chloe Kelly, securing the team’s victory in the 110th minute.

The Lionesses’ win also marked a historic moment for women’s sport in England, with Arsenal icon and presenter Alex Scott reminding viewers that people were “begging” stadiums to host women’s games just a few years ago.

“Back in 2018, we were begging people to host in their stadiums a women’s game… so many people said no,” she said in a now-viral clip.

“I hope you’re all looking at yourselves right now because you weren’t brave enough.”

Becky Hill added on Twitter after the Lionesses’ win: “What an incredible result… I’m so proud to be a woman, I’m so proud to be living through history. I’m honoured to have opened up that incredible match today.

“It’s home girls!”
