Artist Melissa Wilkinson returns to Provincetown with ‘AFTER IMAGE’ her new work at Studio Lacombe
Queerguru first met watercolorist Melissa Wilkinson in December 2021 when she made her debut appearance (as the sole queer woman) at Art Gaysel, Miami’s Queerest ArtFair curated by Alex Guerra at Hotel Gaythering (see HERE). We’ve been big fans of her work ever since
She creates watercolor paintings inspired by found imagery drawn from disco culture, old Hollywood films, vintage photographs, and online archives. Her work reimagines these references through a queer lens, blending masculine and feminine qualities to explore identity, memory, and gender expression. Influenced by glitch art and digital distortion, her paintings move between realism and abstraction, creating images that feel both familiar and unsettled. Using delicate layers of watercolor and ink wash, Wilkinson transforms everyday source material into intimate, labor-intensive works that reflect on vulnerability, attraction, and self-construction. Her practice combines the slow, tactile tradition of painting with imagery shaped by contemporary digital culture, resulting in works that feel simultaneously nostalgic, strange, and deeply personal.
