Andy Cohen has spoken out about his viral outbursts while hosting CNN’s New Year’s Eve countdown, stating that he was “drunk and feeling it” on the night.

The Watch What Happens Live host left viewers delighted with his shady comments about the likes of New York City mayor Bill de Blasio and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg after enjoying multiple shots with Anderson Cooper during the live broadcast on 31 December.

Now the 53-year-old has admitted that he had a bit too much fun on the job as he backtracked on a sassy jab he made against rival broadcast, ABC’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.

On the night, Cohen referred to “Ryan Seacrest’s group of losers that are performing behind us” and told CNN viewers: “I mean, with all due [respect], if you’ve been watching ABC tonight, you’ve seen nothing. I’m sorry.”

The Bravo host issued a public apology during his SiriusXM show Radio Andy on Monday (3 January) as he stated: “The only thing that I regret saying, the only thing is that I slammed ABC’s [broadcast of Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve], and I really like Ryan Seacrest and he’s a great guy.

“I was just stupid and drunk and feeling it. And it was, I was continuing the Journey rant, and I just kept talking and I shouldn’t have, and I felt bad about that. So that is the only thing [I regret]. It’s the only thing”.

Cohen insisted he had been joking about Seacrest and claimed that headlines about the quip had taken things out of context.

“The headlines about Ryan Seacrest are all like I trash Ryan Seacrest. I’m like, I really, I hope he hears the clip. You know what I mean?” he told listeners.

The morning after the broadcast Andy Cohen shared a playful tweet stating that he was “a bit over-served” during the live show.

Thankfully, CNN hasn’t taken any issue with the host outbursts as they said in a statement: “Andy Cohen said something he shouldn’t have on live TV.

“We’ve addressed it with him and look forward to having him back again next year.”
